Background

  • The client is developing a modern logistics hub in Colombo Port and is seeking to provide efficient logistics and warehousing to facilitate container volume growth and increase the port’s competitive positioning as a leading container transhipment hub in South Asia.

Client Objectives

  • Capture part of the Multi-Country Consolidation (MCC) volumes currently moving to/from South Asia and East Africa. 

  • Capture part of the Re-export container volumes, currently handled at Jebel Ali and Singapore.

Drewry Approach

  • Mapping and estimating the MCC volume in the target markets in South Asia and East Africa

  • Mapping and estimating the re-export volumes handled at Jebel Ali and Singapore

  • Primary research was undertaken using local associates and industry contacts to:

    • Estimate the MCC volumes and to map the flow to/from the target markets 

    • Identify the key commodities

  • Secondary research using trade and custom data to:

    • Estimate Re-export volumes handled at Singapore and Jebel Ali

    • Map country and commodity wise flow

  • Estimate the volumes which could be captured by the propose new Logistics centre

  • Provided detailed liner service network at competing hub ports

Results Achieved

  • The study provided a commodity and country-based breakdown of MCC and Re-export volumes. This helped in estimating the target market size based on both origin and destination of the cargo.

  • Findings and conclusions from the study contributed to client’s marketing and business plan.
